Rather unpleasant and unsightly, nail fungus infections (onychomycosis) is estimated to account for up to 50% of all nail problems, making it a very common concern. Some typical signs that you may have a nail fungus infection are:

  • Discoloration of the affected nail (yellowish)
  • Brittleness and crumbling of the nail
  • Mild thickening of the nail

As the nail fungus progresses, so to do the symptoms; the nail becomes yellower, more brittle, and thicker, resulting in pain. The nail fungus can also spread to other nails and the surrounding skin, causing athletes foot. Treating severe nail fungus and related problems is more difficult, so early identification and treatment is key. Treating nail fungus can be challenging, as they take considerable time to clear, even when the treatment is working. The appearance of the damaged nail will not return to normal even after the nail fungus is cleared, until the damaged nail grows out and is replaced by a new, healthy nail. This happens within about six months for finger nails, and twelve to eighteen months for toe nails.
