Sciatic Massage Therapy
“Sciatica” refers to a medical condition of pain travelling down a leg (the front, back, or outside), from the lower back. Typically this pain travels down only one leg of the person experiencing the symptoms of sciatica, but there are times when certain causes may result in pain in both legs. Lower back pain is sometimes, but not always, present, and weakness, numbness, pain or a burning sensation may occur in various parts of the leg or foot. The pain can be mild and cause slight tingling, or severe which can prohibit the sufferer from moving or even lying down.
The causes of sciatica vary:
- Spinal disc herniation pressing on one of the lumbar or sacral nerve roots in the lower back
- Spinal stenosis
- Piriformis syndrome
- Pelvic tumors
- Infections or injury in or around the lumbar spine
- Pregnancy (compression caused by baby)

How can sciatic massage therapy help you?
Tight lower back muscles can place stress on your nerve roots. Sciatic massage therapy loosens these muscles and helps prevent pinching and irritation for long lasting relief. A sciatic massage also encourages the release of pain fighting endorphins which can provide temporary relief from symptoms like throbbing pain in your foot, or a burning sensation in your leg. By using “trigger-point sciatic massage therapy” in which our certified clinician assesses the entire back and buttock area, then applies pressure to irritated and inflamed areas in the piriformis muscle (the sciatic nerve is located under this), as well as in muscles in the lower back and glutes, symptoms of sciatica can be alleviated.
